Disney goodness with a wicked twist
Director: Robert Stromberg
Cast: Angelina Jolie, Sam Riley, Sharlto Copley and Elle Fanning
Thanks to Disney and the cache of the local library of classic fairy tales , we have all grown up believing that there is such a thing as true love ‘s kiss . But what actually happens in reality? Or is it just an illusion of hope we hold on to our childhood influences ? If you like to give a “real ” in their old fables , then back Maleficent is the piece of writing in 2014 more genuinely creative . But it comes with a generous amount of sentimentality , the kind where you have to believe in love , compassion and kindness of heart. All material par excellence you’d find in a book of Disney ‘s hand . Dotted with fairy dust and all.
The only reason you’d see this movie is Angelina Jolie. No she is not sleeping beauty, but the evil fairy Maleficent laid the curse on Princess Aurora in forcing her endless sleep . Disney fans would know that Maleficent , aside from having a name that’s a mouthful and pretty darn hard to get a hang of, is one of the most popular antagonists fairytale land . Like any popular character , needed its own backstory . Hence the need for film Maleficent . One in which the villain is the hero .
That Angelina looks lovely as ever , even when his facial features are made to stand out as an elf or witch is part of the magic of Maleficent . But the really fun part of this movie are the turns putting on Sleeping Beauty story . That edgy twist is the result of truly creative writing. Only time will tell if this becomes a modern classic. But if any movie always had the potential, Maleficent .
Pity then that does not seem as fun or even as charming as the original Sleeping Beauty 1959 . All characters in the film are in this account, the dramatic beats are spot on. The leading lady , Angelina , and countless expressions and emotions are captivating . But at every crucial point in the film , you feel like something you lost. It is as if the whiff of magic that makes Disney films unforgettable just is not there .
What apparently lacks soul , it makes up in the visual magic. The Moors mystical , magical creatures where many different fairies and elves living are a CGI masterpiece . They visual charm Maleficent is on par with memorable films like Pan’s Labyrinth . The action sequences are exciting and the chemistry between Angelina and Sam Riley, playing for Maleficent DIAVAL changing Raven , it’s lovely .
If your adult mind does not reject the ideas that fairy tales taught you as a child, Maleficent can offer a wonderful trip, full of hope and love with the right rotation. And if you still believe in the child inside , this is a magical experience certificate .
