Light-hearted romance at its best
Director: Ayan Mukerji
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Kalki Koechlin, Aditya Roy Kapur and Shaikh Farroque
In a mountain slope covered with snow in Manali, Deepika Padukone says, “We raat ki jaise hawa mein nasha tha …” The fact is that Ranbir Kapoor ki toh nasha Aankhon mein hai. Acting ka Nasha. The man seems to have overcome all your inhibitions. He seems to flow in the narrative of the film. It is flawless. He is superlative in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. The film rides on the performance of RK. Otherwise, it’s a breezy love story. Follow the way of love film more predictable. But even clichés can not stop the charm tour-de-force that Ayan Mukerji’s writing and the performances of the cast bring to the big screen. This is the big ticket as it gets.
Ranbir Kapoor as Kabir is a perfect mirror for most children of the 21st century, they think ethos is around the world in 80 days. YJHD is the story of a boy who grows into a man. Not very different from Wake Up Sid, Mukerji previous offer, but this time, both the director and lead actor are in their element. The result is a film that can satisfy any film snob with relative ease. Pritam’s music is the soul of opera, Badtameez dil is the eighth highest in the toccata.
There are wonderful themes in history, quarrels between friends, the emotional bond between a father and a son or desperate attempts of a young boy running on their own emotions. And the elixir of these issues is something wonderful, conversational and quirky dialogue written by Mukerji. It’s a shame that the core of the film is an unusual love story. Take the train scene of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Steal tone Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The most dazzling Deepika and Ranbir make it all believable charming. But it must have been something else.
YJHD is a film of ‘good’ well packed and becomes a “good” movie thanks to the efforts of action of Kalki Koechlin, Aditya Roy Kapur, Deepika and, of course, Ranbir. Kalki is wild and fun. It is a vibrant new look to it, as Kalki usually comes with dark characters. Aditya seems to be picking up where he left off in Aashiqui 2 and it works for him. His brother Kunaal makes a special appearance and is just too good. Deepika Performance is the perfect complement to Ranbir’s acting chops. She excels in emotional scenes and the romantic.
Entertains YJHD in its 2 and a half hours of runtime. It has great music, super action, stunning visual effects and dialogue right. Has the kind of luxuries. Madhuri Dixit makes an appearance in the Ghagra song in the first 10 minutes. Dilli wali girlfriend gets great mood right Indian wedding. If this is not satisfactory, nothing will. Go see!
